The M240B is a derivative of the FN MAG produced for the United States Military. Able to be carried by an individual service member or mounted on top of a vehicle, the M240B delivers heavy, dense and accurate sustained fire. Defined as a "medium machine gun", this belt-fed beast weighs well over 30 pounds when loaded, though the overwhelming majority of its users retain positive feelings towards the gun. It has been described as being a perfect fit for current US Army warfighting doctrine and has had a successful 40+ year career as it has been designed to fit into tripods found at fixed firing positions, mounted on boats, ground vehicles and helicopters, and fired from the shoulder with the use of the bipod or sturdy cover as support.

FN M240B Features

The M240B, known as the “240 Bravo” or just “two-forty”, is a fully-automatic belt-fed machine gun that operates on a long-stroke gas piston and a Browning-inspired locking action that is most easily described as an inverted BAR action.  Its 21.7 inch barrel is equipped with an adjustable gas block and a rotating carry handle for an easy barrel swap.

FN M240B Capacity

The M240 is chambered in 7.62x51mmNATO and is fed by ammo belts connected together by M13 links.  While the typical belt container holds 100 rounds with larger options holding 200, the nature of linking ammo with disintegrating belts allows the user to have a non-finite ammo capacity.

Measuring just shy of 50 inches long with an unloaded weight of 27.6 pounds, the M240B clearly displays why it comes with a built-in bipod.  While a heavy gun like this can definitely be carried, firing from the shoulder in a standing position is typically saved for Hollywood.  While its mobility may be low, it can easily be mounted in a vehicle with two quick-release pins and can be dismounted just as fast.

FN M240B Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The 240 is most easily fired from a tripod or its built-in bipod allowing the user to place his or her support hand on top of the stock for added support.  This provides the user with 4 points of contact allowing them to take advantage of the high fire rate and the inherent accuracy of the gun.  The shells eject downwards, too, and this allows the gun to be fired both right and left handed.

FN M240B Fit & Finish

If there’s one thing that Fabrique Nationale knows how to make, it’s belt fed machine guns.  From the M249 up to the Ma Deuce, you will find quality.  The M240B is made mostly out of machined steel parts with very few stamped components or polymer pieces.  Even though this leads to a heavy gun, the performance and reliability still far surpass other general purpose machine guns currently in use.
