The 7.62x57mm UKM was designed by Michael Uekotter and certified by the Permanent International Commission for Firearms Testing in 2002. The parent case is based off a .338 Lapua Magnum by narrowing down the neck to fit a .7.82mm bullet on a large rifle casing. The ballistic performances for 5 grain type velocities are 3,468 ft/s (155 gr), 3,300 ft/s (168 gr), 3,240 ft/s (181 gr), 3,149 ft/s (185 gr), and 2,982 ft/s (220 gr). While the 7.62x57mm UKM is no longer on the market, the American .300 Dakota is considered its twin. The .300 Dakota is based off the .404 Jeffery that was designed in 1909 as a rimless large rifle magnum cartridge. The .300 Dakota is a rebated rim which cuts down cost and allows users to change out barrels or custom fit receivers to use in different firearms. The .300 Dakota is used for long range shooting, but like other bullets in its class the barrel needs to be replaced typically after 700-1000 rounds of wear on the barrel. To reduce wear on the barrel they should be cleaned after every 5 shots to help increase the lifespan.
