Benelli Unveils M4 A.I. Drone Guardian for Short-Range Drone Defense

Italian firearms manufacturer Benelli has unveiled its latest innovation in battlefield technology: the M4 A.I. Drone Guardian, a purpose-built, semi-automatic shotgun designed to neutralize small drones at close range. Leveraging the legendary reliability of the M4 platform, this new shotgun addresses the growing threat of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in modern combat.

A Tactical Answer to an Evolving Threat

Drones have become an increasingly common presence on the battlefield, with many being used for surveillance, reconnaissance, or delivering explosive payloads. In response, Benelli has developed a shotgun that bridges the gap between traditional kinetic weaponry and cutting-edge anti-drone needs.

“The M4 A.I. Drone Guardian is engineered to serve as a last-resort defense when electronic countermeasures fall short,” said a Benelli spokesperson. “It’s built for fast, accurate, and devastating engagement of small drones in high-pressure environments.”

Engineered for Precision and Reach

At the heart of the system is Benelli’s Advanced Impact (A.I.) Barrel System, a patented design featuring a longer and wider cone that improves shot pattern spread and penetration. This system enables the shotgun to remain effective from point-blank range out to 50 meters, with tested success at distances exceeding 100 meters.

Complementing this is the proven A.R.G.O. (Auto Regulating Gas Operated) system, a hallmark of the M4 series, ensuring consistent performance in even the harshest conditions.

The M4 A.I. Drone Guardian is available in two configurations:

  • 18.5-inch barrel for dismounted personnel requiring rapid mobility.

  • 26-inch barrel for fixed-position defense and longer engagement ranges.

Specialized Ammunition and Optics Ready

To maximize its anti-drone capabilities, the shotgun is optimized for 12-gauge 3" magnum ammunition, including tungsten-based No. 4 buckshot, which offers superior density and stopping power against drone components.

A Picatinny rail and standard ghost ring sights allow for flexible mounting of optics. Benelli recommends pairing the system with the Steiner MPS red dot for rapid target acquisition under dynamic conditions.

Combat-Ready Utility

Designed for military and law enforcement use, the M4 A.I. Drone Guardian fits into a broader counter-UAS strategy by offering a man-portable, kinetic solution to drones that evade jamming or are deployed in close proximity.

“This isn’t just a shotgun it’s a precision tool in the fight against emerging aerial threats,” experts say, pointing to its blend of traditional firearm engineering and forward-looking adaptability.

Available Now

The M4 A.I. Drone Guardian is currently available through Benelli Defense outlets, and is already attracting attention from defense agencies and private security contractors around the globe.
